People of ProsperUs: Patrice Davis of Grannies Pound Cake

Patrice Davis, Owner of Grannies Pound Cakes

Have you had a taste of Grannies Pound Cake? Do you know the person responsible for creating it? Meet Patrice Davis, the founder. Despite having no prior experience or family background in making pound cakes, she taught herself to create them from scratch. The delectable recipes she developed have made her product irresistible.

In 2018, Patrice, a retired special education teacher, founded Grannies Pound Cake to be an active entrepreneur.

When I retired, I didn't want to be the lady sitting on the porch, watching the cars go up and down the street. I needed something to keep me busy, so I created Grannies Pound Cake.

The business originally had a different name, but Patrice’s son recommended using “Grannies Pound Cake” because of its relatable and nostalgic appeal. “He said many people can identify with their grandmother making a pound cake.”

Patrice’s son was correct. Customers who tried her sample pound cakes often said it reminded them of their grandmother’s or someone else’s family recipe.

Patrice overcame a significant obstacle when convincing retail outlets to accept her proposal. Initially, some retailers were hesitant about the price point she suggested for her pound cakes. Despite this, Patrice remained persistent until they eventually agreed to carry her products. This was a significant achievement for her business.

Patrice discovered ProsperUs through Grandmont Rosedale at the Northwest Detroit Farmers Market. Grandmont Rosedale informed her about our Entrepreneurship Training Program, which offers an overview of essential business concepts and personalized one-on-one support. We support training participants in registering their businesses, developing budgets and bookkeeping systems, and creating a solid business plan while holding them accountable throughout the process.

While in the ProsperUs Detroit class, I fell in love with the coach's energy and knowledge. The experience was phenomenal.

During the program, she gained valuable knowledge about key factors that could help her business thrive. This included learning about accounting, bookkeeping, and social media, and the training helped her step out of her comfort zone and do a pitch.

Delivering those pitches really made me believe in myself and that I could do it, it made me step my game up, and knowing that I need to create an income statement. Everything that I learned definitely took me to another level.

Patrice’s goal is to expand Grannies Pound Cake’s distribution to retail stores throughout the United States and provide employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
