The Monica Echeverri Casarez Neighborhood Hero Awards were established in 2022 to honor the memory of our beloved trainer, friend, and community advocate, Monica Echeverri Casarez. Each year, this award celebrates entrepreneurs, community supporters, and small business advocates who embody the spirit of investment in A Future for Us—a future of community resilience, entrepreneurship, and advocacy.
Monica was taken from us too soon by the COVID-19 pandemic, but her contributions to the communities of Southwest Detroit and beyond will never be forgotten. As an instructor, business coach, and consultant, Monica passionately supported entrepreneurs on their journeys, supporting them to turn their dreams into reality. She was a fierce advocate for justice, a leader who worked tirelessly for those in need, and a friend who brought joy and insight to all who knew her.
Through this award, we honor Monica’s dedication to empowering entrepreneurs, and her legacy lives on in the work of those who continue to build strong, thriving communities. Each year, we reflect on Monica’s impact while celebrating those who are making a difference in the present.
