Achsha Jones | Women’s History Month

We admire Achsha's fresh inventiveness as she continues to move forward. One can truly say the entrepreneurial spirit of Detroit thrives in her.

Achsha Jones is one of our most creative and innovative graduates to have completed our courses. As a working single mother in the late 2000’s, she realized that simply a job in sales would not cut it anymore. She knew she loved to cook and since she had plenty of experience in sales, debuting in the food industry was the logical next step. At the time, food delivery services or mobile food businesses were scarce, so she saw a great opportunity in incorporating a truck/bus into her business model.

After several names and rebrandings, Achsha finally had the strike of inspiration to name her business “Lunch Brake,” which makes a play on words with “lunch breaks” and “car brakes.” Achsha had big expectations for Lunch Brake last year as everything had finally fallen into place. She had her bus, commercial driver’s license, and business plan set up for nothing less than success.

Just as Achsha was ready to go, COVID-19 crashed through the door and threw her best-laid plans out the window. Achsha had to put her dream on hold, and took a job as a Sales Coordinator at the Detroit Historical Museum. But the ever-resourceful Achsha came up with another big idea— Brake Time Tours! A bus tour guide that will show you the city of Detroit through Achsha’s eyes. Achsha does not back down, like a sixth sense, she sees the opportunity in every situation.

Investing in her business has been a challenge when most of her income must go into her family so she continues applying for grants and exploring new opportunities. At this time, she is currently in the process of completing her capstone project with New leaders Detroit in TechTown Detroit.

We admire Achsha’s fresh inventiveness as she continues to move forward. One can truly say the entrepreneurial spirit of Detroit thrives in her.
