People of ProsperUs: Gary Ringer A Whole Home Holistic Approach

Detroit firefighter-turned-entrepreneur Gary Ringer leads Eco-Environmental Solutions, advancing energy efficiency, generational wealth, and community impact with support from ProsperUs Detroit.
Building Sustainably

For Gary Ringer, founder of Eco-Environmental Solutions, sustainability work began long before the business was formalized. A Detroit firefighter for more than two decades, Gary has stepped inside hundreds of homes during some of their most vulnerable moments. That lived experience shaped how he understands both the built environment and the people who live within it.

Eco-Environmental Solutions initially focused on deconstruction and landfill diversion, salvaging materials from blighted properties to reduce waste and restore value to Detroit neighborhoods. While that early vision evolved, it laid the groundwork for what the company is today: an energy efficiency and environmental remediation business committed to lowering utility cost burdens and improving health and safety for residents in one of the largest majority-Black cities in the country.

Gary now approaches each home through what he calls a “whole home” lens. Plumbing issues, aging infrastructure, or even a small carbon monoxide leak can affect more than physical safety; they can impact emotional and mental well-being.

His work centers on identifying root causes and preparing homes for long-term stability.

Eco-Environmental Solutions is not simply about identifying repairs. It is also about preparation, creating the conditions for transformation so that homes and the families within them can thrive.

Legacy Beyond What Is Seen

Growing up in Detroit and witnessing both disinvestment and resurgence, Gary connects Black History Month to opportunity, ownership, and collective progress. That contrast fuels his commitment to ensuring neighborhoods continue moving forward rather than remaining in decline.

Reflecting on his journey, Gary asks, “How can I, within my sphere of influence, make sure nobody can turn off the lights where I’m at?” For him, the answer lies in steady, purposeful work.

Environmental remediation may not always be visible or glamorous, but it is foundational. It presents an opportunity to support communities where they are, reinforcing the everyday systems that make homes safer, more efficient, and more sustainable. For Gary, the work is deeply personal. It creates space to help families minimize utility bills, reduce their carbon footprint, and make practical adjustments now that create meaningful returns over time that enhance their overall quality of life.

Gary views generational wealth not only as financial assets but as diversification of skills, lived experience, relationships, and shared knowledge. He understands that wealth expands when people understand how their homes function, how energy is consumed, and how small, informed decisions can shift long-term outcomes. Passing down that awareness is just as valuable as passing down property. It equips families with tools to make smarter choices and build confidence in navigating systems that often feel overwhelming. In this way, his work strengthens not only physical structures, but also the capacity of individuals and communities to plan, adapt, and thrive across generations.

By improving housing quality, lowering energy costs, and protecting health, his work supports stability. Stability builds wealth. Wealth builds legacy. In that way, Eco-Environmental Solutions contributes to a broader narrative of Black entrepreneurship rooted in shared uplift.

An Ecosystem of Support

Gary first connected with ProsperUs Detroit through the Cody Rouge Community Action Alliance, joining one of its earliest cohorts. Over time, ProsperUs has supported his growth in multiple ways, from technical assistance to launching his website to participation in the inaugural cohort of Building Your Contractor Business Program in partnership with Detroit Future Ops.

Today, Eco-Environmental Solutions stands as both a business and a mission. It prepares the ground for healthier homes, stronger neighborhoods, and long-term generational growth.

In the spirit of Black History Month, Gary’s story reminds us that legacy is built one home at a time, through steady commitment to community, practical solutions that meet real needs, and the belief that sustainable living is a pathway to long-term empowerment.
